Suffering with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
The Third Space Medicine offers individualised programmes for the treatment and management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (also known as IBS, spastic colon or mucous colitis).
What is IBS?
It is a common condition in which recurrent abdominal pain with constipation and/or diarrhoea continues for years without any general deterioration in physical health. Symptoms are caused by abnormal muscular contractions in the intestine. It can also cause swelling and pressure. It is not known what causes IBS, but stress and anxiety are often associated with the condition.
Facts:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is probably the most commonly diagnosed digestive complaint.
- Up to 25% of all visits to a consultant gastroenterologist are for this condition.
- The criteria for diagnosing IBS state that more than three motions a day or less than three motions a week for 3 months, are diagnostic. If you have other significant symptoms such as bleeding from the bowel, or unexplained weight loss, then your condition is not IBS solely and must be properly diagnosed.
Appointments
Appointments with our GP are available and tests can be carried out. Complementary therapies are considered the best way to treat IBS, but we are very happy to treat via our orthodox GP route if you prefer.
In our experience we find that an appropriate combination of 2 or more of our available treatments is often highly effective.
